It’s been about a week now since Etta James, one of the most talented and recognisible characters in the Rhythm and Blues scene of the 50′s and 60′s, passed away. She had a sound that blended Jazz, R&B and Rock & Roll and Gospel in equal parts with a voice that stands head and shoulders above her peers.
There’s been so much written about James, so to regurgitate it would do you and her no favours. Instead, Here are four of my favourite Etta James songs, spanning a good chunk of her career. They show how talented she was, as well as demonstrating the breadth of her influences.
